Job Summary Information. Function: Engineering. Sub-Function: Patent Documentation. Job Purpose: Career patent writing position. ¿¿ Job Level Summary Information. ¿ Scope: Senior Patent Writer is an experienced patent documentation position. The Senior Patent Writer can draft detailed patent applications and work with partners in IP Law and Engineering teams to help steer patents through the submission process. The Senior Patent Writer will liaise with subject matter experts and members of the Johnson Controls legal team to ensure that patent submissions are comprehensive, and will supervise and assist other patent writers in the crafting of patent applications. ¿ Impact : Able to prepare all necessary patent application documentation, including the patent specification itself, as well as other official forms and correspondence related to the application. Able to prepare correspondence defending patent applications in both pre-grant and post-grant prosecution. ¿ Knowledge: Good technical writing skills and proficient command of the English language. Excellent understanding of patent application process. Good understanding of the product development process and extensive familiarity with contemporary developments in advanced building systems. ¿ Problem Solving: Can work through complex issues, liaising with engineering staff and legal department as necessary. Recognises which patent elements require the expertise of others. ¿ Interpersonal Skills: Excellent ability to interact with engineers, other subject matter experts and legal department staff from around the world. Ability to provide guidance to junior patent writing staff. Adapts readily to changing work demands; maintains composure under pressure. Works effectively with others. Shares information. Demonstrates integrity. Honors commitments. ¿ Essential Job Responsibilities. Liaise with engineering staff to learn about products in development and write patent specifications accordingly. Obtain source material (specifications, illustrations, etc.) from engineering staff and prepare submissions in support of patent applications. Liaise with legal department to ensure that all documentation submitted in support of patent applications conforms to requirements. Provide guidance to junior patent writing staff and help them to obtain and understand source material. Maintain timely correspondence with patent office throughout patent application process, including pre-grant and post-grant prosecution. #external. Preferred Education: Four year degree in a technical discipline (Engineering, Computer Science, etc.) Minimum Preference Experience: Minimum of 5 years' experience as a patent writer. Less for a registered patent agent. Ideally with some leadership responsibility. Additional Qualifications. Patent Writing - Ability to gather source material, liaise with legal and subject matter experts, and amalgamate information into clear and compelling patent application documentation. Entry to the Register of Patent Agents - A formal qualification as a patent agent is an advantage but is not essential. Knowledge of intellectual property law is desirable. Technical Illustration - Ability to create and edit readable technical illustrations using Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop and Visio (or equivalents.
