Job Summary Information. Function: Engineering. Sub-Function: Patent Documentation. Job Purpose: Entry level patent writing position. ¿ ¿ Job Level Summary Information. ¿ Scope: Graduate Patent Writer is an entry level patent documentation position. Working under the direct supervision of more senior patent writing staff, the Graduate Patent Writer can draft elements of patent applications and prepare draft correspondence as part of the patent filing process. ¿ Impact: Able to prepare drafts of routine patent application elements, such as patent specification outlines, as well as drafts of official forms and correspondence related to patent applications. ¿ Knowledge: Good technical writing skills and proficient command of the English language. Communication and general technical skills. Understanding of intellectual property law. ¿ Problem Solving: Can work through simple issues. Knows when to escalate and get help. ¿ Supervision Received: ¿ ¿Direct supervision by more senior patent documentation staff. ¿ Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact with engineers, other subject matter experts and legal department staff from around the world. Essential Job Responsibilities. Under the direct supervision of more senior staff create simple patent application elements or modify existing patent application elements.¿ Obtain source material (specifications, illustrations, etc.) from engineering staff and prepare drafts of submissions to patent office in support of patent applications.¿ Liaise with engineering staff to learn about products in development and write basic patent specification outlines accordingly. #external. Preferred Education: ¿Engineering or other technical/science degree, preferably with some knowledge of patents and intellectual property law. ¿ Minimum Preference Experience: ¿Entry level position, suitable for applicants with 0-2 patent writing experience. ¿ Additional Qualifications. Background in IP Law - Knowledge of intellectual property law is desirable but not essential. Interest in New Technology - A broad interest in contemporary technological developments is desirable. Technical Illustration - Ability to create and edit readable technical illustrations with minimal supervision using Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop and Visio (or equivalents.
